Sherman voters approve $14.7 million budget

The town on Saturday voted to approve the proposed $14.7 million budget for 2017-18.
The town budget passed, 416 to 96, while the school budget passed, 389 to 123.
First Selectman Clay Cope said he anticipated the budget would pass, citing a 0.9 percent increase over last year’s budget and no increase in property or real estate taxes.
The school budget did not increase. The town’s budget was 2.4 percent higher than it was in 2016-17, largely due to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s proposal towns such as Sherman pay 100 percent of Resident State Trooper costs.
Earlier in the budget process, there was some objection to the school’s $9.38 million budget. Three parents asked the Board of Selectmen to send the school budget back to the school board because they said it amounted to an educational overhaul without their input. Cope said he would not do so, saying these parents had plenty of opportunities to address the school board.
Cope said he hasn’t heard any objection to the town budget.
Town officials were able to hold off a tax increase because of growth in the town’s grand list and “debt-cost savings from renegotiated bonds,” Cope said.
A septic ordinance also passed, but by a narrower margin of 298 to 208.

Sherman residents approve spending on tennis courts, new website

Residents recently approved more than $150,00 in payments for projects and purchases ranging from three new tennis courts at Veteran’s Field to five new defibrillators for the fire department.

Almost all of the expenditures approveds were by unanimous vote at the town meeting late last month. The money to cover every expenditure, other than a Happy Acres Farm emergency mold remediation project, will come from the town’s capital non-recurring fund. Some $300,000 will be left in the capital account after the payments are made.

For the tennis courts, town officials had previously approved up to $135,000 on the project, but bids from four companies came in around $200,000, so the town approved up to $99,000 more for the task.

Among the more noteworthy expenditures approved was up to $10,000 for the design and development of a new town website. The existing website, townofsherman.org,has changed little in the last decade or possibly more.

The Happy Acres Farm project to repair bathrooms contaminated by mold, which will be funded through a farm trust, will cost about $8,000.

Other projects approved late last month vary in size and cost:

Up to $10,000 was approved to buy new washing machines for the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department.

Up to $2,500 was approved to buy new office furniture for Social Services.

Up to $1,800 was approved to buy armchairs for the Senior Center.

And up to $34,000 was approved to construct new docks WHERE?.
