First classes at Naugatuck Valley Community College’s new Danbury campus begin late August

After extensive renovations of a vacant downtown building, the first classes atNaugatuck Valley Community College’s new Danbury campus will begin at the end of August.
“We expect that the keys will be handed to the college on Aug. 15,” NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis said. I’m so grateful and so happy.”
Classes begin on Aug. 29. About 1,300 students are enrolled at the new campus and buses are running between the college’s Waterbury and Danbury locations.
For years, officials with the community college, which already had a satellite location on Main Street, have worked to locate and create a larger site due in part due to increasing enrollment. Downtown stakeholders have said the campus is one of the cornerstones of redevelopment efforts.
“We’re just hoping, and waiting, and watching, and excited about the opening,” said Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton.
Even after the site at the corner of West and Main streets was chosen, it took some time for state officials to move forward in the leasing process, which required approvals from a variety of departments including the state attorney general’s office.
The community college is leasing about 20,000 square feet of thePershing building at 190 Main St., which is more than three times the size of its current facility.
The renovations are ongoing at the 1920s art deco building, which was vacant for about four decades. De Filippis said Thursday that crews were painting and installing floors. The larger space will include additional classrooms, a large lecture space, computer labs, science labs, a health lab, a large multipurpose room for tutoring, a library and a seasonal bookstore. The building is owned by Joe DaSilva, local downtown landlord.
“This is a critical piece for our downtown redevelopment plans,” said P.J. Prunty, executive director of CityCenter Danbury. “The property owner has been burning the candle at both ends to get ready for the fall classes … kudos to Joe DaSilva, he really got this project together.”
The Danbury campus will now offer business management, liberal arts and general studies degrees, along with credit certificates in administrative support and business management. Students can also register for any of NVCC’s 88 credit degrees or certificates, including an Advanced Manufacturing Technology certificate offered in collaboration with Henry Abbott Technical High School.
Danbury credit students receive a free unlimited Housatonic Area Regional Transit bus pass. In addition, the college recently partnered with Peter Pan bus lines to offer its students a transportation link between NVCC’s Danbury and Waterbury campuses at a significantly reduced rate of $2 per one-way trip.
