DUTCHESS COUNTY HISTORIC TAVERN TRAIL CONTINUES NEXT STOP: STISSING HOUSE IN PINE PLAINS THIS FRIDAY

trail_logo

The Dutchess County Historic Tavern Trail series continues this week at the Stissing House, located at 7801 S. Main Street in Pine Plains, on Friday, August 12th, at 6 p.m.   The Historic Tavern Trail, in its inaugural year, brings history and local cuisine together, while introducing the community to iconic locales, with each installment held at a different historic location featuring a brief presentation on the site’s history.

Built by Cornelius Elmendorph in 1782, the Stissing House served as a stagecoach inn on the main line connecting Connecticut to the Hudson River. Over time, the building housed successive inns and restaurants, and purportedly served as a brothel at one time. Dutchess County Historian William P. Tatum III will present a program exploring the Stissing House’s history and will draw on the county’s Ancient Documents Collection for insights on tavern life. Attendees will receive a 10% discount on dinner at the Stissing House.

Dutchess County Historian William P. Tatum III said, “The Dutchess County Historic Tavern Trail highlights many of our iconic buildings and the history contained in our epic landscape. These programs are a fun way to explore the links between history, cuisine, and local culture that make our area such a vibrant place.”

The Tavern Trail is a collaborative endeavor between the Dutchess County Department of History, the Dutchess County Historical Society, and local historical societies to create an innovative program that highlights the county’s rich history.

Future installments of the series will visit Old Drover’s Inn in Dover Plains on September 9th, the Kimlin Cider Mill in Poughkeepsie on October 14th, and Dutch’s Spirits in Pine Plains on October 28th.

Reservations may be made online at http://www.meetup.com/DutchessTavernTrail. Tickets for each program are $5 per person and include discounts on meals and access to special tastings at host sites. Additional event details are available atwww.facebook.com/DutchessTavernTrail.

Reduce Mosquitoes around Your Home and Yard
  • Check your property for ANY items that can hold water. Get rid of the items or empty the water out and scrub the inside of the item at least once a week.
  • Drill drain holes in the bottoms of recycling containers, turn over wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use, and remove all discarded tires.
  • If you have a swimming pool or spa that is not in use, drain the water off the cover or treat this standing water with Mosquito Dunks®. The dunks are available free of charge at the Health Department, Building D, 50 Sanatorium Road in Pomona, from April 1 - October 31, Monday - Friday from 9 am to 4 pm, while supplies last. It is important to know the size of your pool when coming to pick up your dunks. In addition, residents can request free larvicide tablets by calling the New York State Department of Health at 1-888-364-4723.
  • Fathead minnows are a type of fish that eat mosquito larvae before they become flying, biting adults. They will be available for one day only and they must be ordered in advance. The fish are available for pick-up ONLY on Thursday, April 20th from 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM at the Health Department. The fish can be placed in unused swimming pools, ornamental ponds, and other similar areas that have a minimum of eight inches of water. For more information, and to order the minnows, while supplies last, call (845) 364-3173 or visithttp://bit.ly/2na0BSG. Please order by April 15th.
  • Tightly cover water storage containers (buckets, cisterns, rain barrels) so that mosquitoes cannot get inside to lay eggs. For containers without lids, use wire mesh with holes smaller than an adult mosquito.
  • Use an outdoor flying insect spray where mosquitoes rest. Mosquitoes rest in dark, humid areas like under patio furniture, or under the carport or garage. When using insecticides, always follow label instructions.
  • If you have a septic tank, repair cracks or gaps. Cover open vent or plumbing pipes. Use wire mesh with holes smaller than an adult mosquito.
  • Make sure that roof gutters drain properly.
  • Clear vegetation and debris from the edges of ponds and remove leaf debris from yards and gardens.
Protect Yourself from Mosquito Bites
Most mosquitoes are not infected with disease-causing viruses. However, to reduce your risk of being bitten, take the following steps:
  • Cover-up as completely as possible. Wear shoes and socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods or when mosquitoes are more active. Most mosquitoes are active between dusk and dawn and will bite when the air is calm. Other mosquitoes, especially the types that breed in containers, will bite at any time of the day.
  • Use mosquito repellent, which should always be applied according to label directions. Do not use repellent on babies younger than 2 months old. Do not use products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol on children younger than 3 years old.
  • Cover baby carriers with mosquito netting when outside.
  • Stay indoors when mosquitoes are more active.
  • Close doors and make sure all windows and doors have screens, and that the screens do not have rips, tears or holes.
To learn more, call the Health Department at 845-364-3173 or visit http://bit.ly/2aXY0E4. To learn more about the Zika virus call the New York State Zika Information Line at 1-888-364-4723 or visit

PAWLING BOARD MEETS ON PENDING ACTION FROM DARYL’S HOUSE

The Town of Pawling is being taken to court by Daryl’s House, the music and food venue owned by Daryl Hall.
The Town of Pawling is being taken to court by Daryl’s House, the music and food venue owned by Daryl Hall.
The town board held a special meeting on Monday for the purpose of retaining the law firm of Stenger, Roberts, Davis, & Diamond, LLP to defend the town in the action that will be heard by Supreme Court Justice Grossman in Dutchess County Supreme Court.
The suit concerns the town’s attempts to alter the occupancy limits of the establishment. Originally, the concert hall was allotted over 300 guests and the town is changing it to approximately 150.
Pawling Town Supervisor David Kelly refrained from commenting on pending litigation citing town policy.
Daryl’s House is represented by the law firm of William Sayegh of Carmel.
“The case alleges that the Town of Pawling has attempted to enforce illegal edicts concerning the number of patrons that may enter the restaurant under the guise of fire safety and newly raised parking concerns,” Sayegh said. “Daryl’s House has been operating for years in full compliance with previously issued Town approvals. The case seeks damages and an injunction against further attempts by the Town to enforce an illegal post Certificate of Occupancy reduction and to restrain the Town from blocking the ongoing backyard concert approval process.”
This is a breaking story and will be updated as information becomes available.

17 WAYS TO HELP SENIORS IN ‘17

It’s eight days into the new year, and if none of the usual resolutions have appealed to you, we at the Office for the Aging can help should you consider giving of your time and talents to your senior friends and neighbors.
Maybe you’d like to help at one of our eight Senior Friendship Centers located all over Dutchess County, or with counseling seniors on their health insurance needs. At any given time we may require volunteer assistance at the dozens of senior exercise classes held at 50 locations throughout Dutchess County, or with help at our many countywide Brain Games sessions.
Our next season of “A Matter of Balance” classes gets underway in just over one month, and if you’d like to volunteer to lead a class, we can help you learn more on how to do so.
If you enjoy driving, our Home Delivered Meals program may be able to use your assistance in bringing hundreds of nutritious meals to seniors all over Dutchess. If you have office skills, the Office for the Aging headquarters in the City of Poughkeepsie could use the extra pairs of hands. If summertime is when you’ll have free time, there will be twelve opportunities to assist at our Senior Picnics, which begin in late May and end in late August.
There will also be opportunities to volunteer at our Celebration of Aging in May, at the Senior Prom in October, and at our Senior Seminars in November.
That brings us to eleven ways to volunteer within the Office for the Aging’s day-to-day schedule, but if you have other ideas in mind we know of many other ways you can help your senior friends and neighbors.
In northeastern Dutchess County, the North East Community Center performs a vital role helping seniors in Amenia, Dover, Millerton, North East, Pine Plains and Wassaic find safe transportation to medical, social-service and other essential appointments; call Monte Stone at (518) 789-4259 or email info@neccmillerton.org to find out more.
Volunteers are also needed to join the Retired Senior and Volunteer Program, delivering meals to shut-ins, providing transportation to the elderly for medical visits and shopping, income tax preparation and much more.  Call JoAnn Hickman at (845) 452-5104, ext. 101 for more information.
You could help Friends of Seniors ((845) 485-1277 or friendsofseniors.biz) in their work on behalf of Dutchess County seniors needing non-emergency medical transportation, grocery shopping help and telephone reassurance.
The Hudson Valley chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association relies on a wide range of volunteer assistance, including office and event help, advocacy, support group leadership and much more. Call (845) 471-2655 to help.
Also, the New York State Long-Term Care Ombudsman program uses volunteers to advocate for the best possible treatment for residents of long-term care facilities. Learn more about their opportunities at (845) 229-4680.
That’s at least 17 ways to help our seniors, but we’re sure you know others. Let us know about them using the contact information below.

DUTCHESS COUNTY OFFICE FOR THE AGING’S AGING NEWS FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 13

  • Due to the impending snowstorm, all eight of Dutchess County’s Senior Friendship Centers will be closed on Tuesday, March 14. The county’s Home Delivered Meals program will not operate on Tuesday, so those who use the program should have their “blizzard boxes” ready.
  • Additionally, the State of the County forum with County Executive Marcus Molinaro at the Town of Poughkeepsie Senior Center originally scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed to Wednesday, April 5th at 1 p.m.
  • Local utilities are also advising customers to be prepared for potential service disruptions, with as much as two feet of snow forecasted. Customers can stay up-to-date with Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation at www.CentralHudson.com and with New York State Gas & Electric (NYSEG) at http://www.nyseg.com/Outages/default.html.
  • Dial-A-Ride and Flex services have been cancelled for Tuesday, March 14th. Service disruptions or suspension for regular routes should be anticipated for tomorrow. Service changes or cancellations will be posted at www.dutchessny.gov/loop.htm as well as Dutchess County Government’s Facebook and Twitter social media pages and will be provided to local radio stations and other media outlets.
  • Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro is advising residents the County is preparing to activate a State of Emergency should the storm develop and hit as expected. Final determinations about emergency declarations, including possible travel restrictions, will be made very early tomorrow morning to provide public notification by 5am. Should an emergency declaration be made, Dutchess County Government offices, including courts, will be closed. All updates will be posted to the County’s website www.dutchessny.gov and social media pages including Facebook and Twitter.

SNOW TIPS: If you’re on social media, following your local fire and police departments and other first responders is an excellent idea. Here’s an example of good advice, courtesy of the Facebook page of the Tivoli Fire Department:
With everyone’s mind set on Tuesday with the storm, here’s what you should expect:
– It’s going to snow and will be heavy at times. With up to 2 inches an hour expected, we are anticipating at least 12 inches;
– It will be cold and with this arctic blast, expect road conditions to deteriorate rapidly due to the already cold ground and snow cover. Highway departments will have a tough time keeping up with the roads. It’s best just not to drive. Get your vehicles to off-street parking whenever possible.
– It’s a high moisture storm so the snow should be wet and heavy; with the weight of the snow, expect some power outages in the area along with the wind.
– Cloud cover should be rolling in late Monday and snowfall early Tuesday, lasting until late night Tuesday with scattered snow showers on Wednesday.
– If you haven’t already made preparations you should do so in the remaining hours of Monday. Plan for the worst, hope for the best.
– We will be doing our preparations as well, to make sure we can get to you quickly and safely if you need our assistance.
– If you haven’t already done so, today (Monday) is the day to change your smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detector batteries, and if they are old it’s time to buy new ones.
– If you have a hydrant in your yard or nearby, help us out by clearing it for us to save us time in case we need to use them…time is of the essence.
– Check on elderly neighbors and give them a hand with clearing driveways.
– If the power goes out, do not use generators indoors and make sure you have some extra blankets handy.
