Six-term New Milford Mayor Patricia Murphysaid she is running for re-election again.
"There's a couple of good projects coming up that I've worked hard to get the money for," the Republican said this week. "I'm not going to step down now that they're happening."
The 320,000-square-foot Century Brass mill is scheduled to be demolished this spring with plans calling for the Public Works Departmentto move to the Scovill Street site while developing an industrial park on the rest of the 64-acre property. The town received $2.5 million in state bond funding in March toward the demolition.
About $550,000 is coming from the state for construction of a roundabout on Still River Drive at Grove Street and Pickett District Road. New sidewalks and streetscape improvements are to be installed this spring along Bridge Street, a project funded by a $448,000 Small Town Economic Assistance Grant.
During Murphy's tenure, the Grove Street/Route 67 intersection was realigned, the sewer plant was expanded and a new emergency communications system for the town was established.
Republican Town Committee Chairman Pete Bass said the RTC continues to support Murphy.
"We look forward as always to working with the mayor and continuing to move New Milford forward," Bass said. "The past 12 years show that the town's people support her endeavors. Every two years, there is a referendum on that, and every two years, she continues to win."
Murphy first ran in 2003 on a promise to bring improved civility and fiscal responsibility to town government.
When she was re-elected for a sixth term in November 2013, she moved past Cliff Chapin as the longest-serving chief executive for New Milford in at least 60 years. Chapin was first selectman from 1977 to 1987.
Chapin, who died in 1996, was the father of Murphy's husband, state Sen. Clark Chapin, who represents the 30th District, which includes New Milford.
New Milford Democrats have run lackluster campaigns in opposition to Murphy since 2003. She easily beat Sheldon Pruss (2003), Joe Riberio (2005), and Larry Stillman (2007) and Bob Coppola (2009). In August 2011, with little party support behind him, Democrat Jeff Winter withdrew from the mayoral race. The 2013 election found Murphy again unopposed by a Democrat, with independent candidate Doyle Lian garnering 48 votes to Murphy's 3,172.
Andy Grossman, chairman of the Democratic Town Committee, said this week the Democrats will have a mayoral candidate in the 2015 race.
"We will be announcing in the next few weeks," Grossman said Monday. "There will be a Democrat running for mayor in New Milford."
Grossman said once his party names its mayoral candidate, the rest of the slate should fill rapidly. He declined to reveal the name of the party's candidate..
