Millennials aren’t the only ones who want to live in downtowns, where restaurants, shops and other amenities are only a walking distance away. So do Baby Boomers.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition – The Art of Alexander Shundi
 Saturday, March 5
5:00 – 6:00 p.m. / Doors open 4:30 p.m.
The Moviehouse Studio Gallery, 48 Main Street, Millerton, NY
MILLERTON, NY—On Saturday, March 5, from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m., The Moviehouse Studio Gallery offers visitors a rare opportunity to hear the poems of Alexander Shundi, read by the artist himself, while viewing their accompanying works of art in the exhibition – The Art of Alexander Shundi.
The exhibition features a number of collages accompanied by poems, written by Shundi in English or Italian with the accompanied translations. The collages/poems are conceived to explore a synergy between expression in spoken-written language, and reactions to visual images. It is all an illusion, primarily. But what follows is of interest: one may serve as a key to decipher the other, and vice versa.
The pieces are conceived primarily as illustration in its purity of meaning: to shed light on a thought concept. Both the discipline of vision and of the written poem, have much in common in the formal means of expression, as in their requirement for balance, mystery, rhythm, atmosphere, and harmony.
As a master of his craft, Shundi’s works display a complex and imaginative mind that is rarely at rest. His work is intricate, and rich in symbolism. Brimming with references to religion, sacred geometry, spirituality and mythology, the work incorporates organic forms, often set within an architectural framework, and often plays with perspective in a unique way – think Bosch, meets Dali with overtones of José Clemente Orozco and De Chirico, while paying homage to African, Amerindian, and early Italian Renaissance art, all within a particularly subjective interpretation of space and time very much within context of modernism.
The readings will take place at 48 Main Street, Millerton, NY. The event is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m.

The campus of the future Olivet University is beginning to take shape at the site of the former Harlem Valley Psychiatric Hospital in Wingdale. Cleanup crews have been pressure washing buildings, mowing lawns, pruning trees long neglected, painting doors.  The newly washed brickwork gives the buildings hope for a second career.  The marble sills and details suggest these buildings were built to last, that they deserve a second chance.
The main roadway heading East has been repaved, the street lights have been refurbished, the trees trimmed making the place look more like a college campus than an abandoned state institution which it was but a few weeks ago.
The American flag is flying next to the Olivet Center sign in front of the main building visible from Rte. 22.  The uplift to the property is noticeable to anyone who drives by.
Olivet Management, which manages four other sites around the country, in Houston, Nashville, Des Moines and Atlanta, are self-described as a “real estate development and management company specializing in school and commercial properties across the United States.”
The plan is to architecturally restore the historic character of the buildings, remediate three of the buildings first, and grow an educational facility in tandem with businesses in order to spur local economic development.
Construction crews are examining roofs, checking plumbing and electric and performing basic survey work before the serious work begins.
The property includes 83 buildings that have not been maintained since state ended its operations there in 1994 and Dover Knolls purchased the property in October 2003.  Olivet Management purchased 503 acres on the east side of the property, with the option to purchase 434 acres on the west side. The property is across the street from the Harlem Valley Wingdale train station.
The Dutchess County Planning Department, the Mid-Hudson Economic Development Council and the Town of Dover have been supportive of the project.
Kathy Schibanoff, CEO of Olivet Management, and former Local Project Coordinator for Dover Knolls said she was pleased the progress.  She is working with local contractors and the Olivet team.
“It is exciting to see the progress made on the grounds and the community support has been wonderful.  Most importantly, the work has meant we could offer jobs to the residents.  There are about 50 people working here now and we look forward to the future development.”

DEC SEEKING ASSISTANCE IN LOCATING BLACK BEAR DENS

This winter, State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) wildlife biologists are seeking the public’s help to learn about new black bear dens throughout New York. As part of DEC’s ongoing monitoring of black bears in New York, wildlife biologists routinely check on black bears during the winter den season. The bears may be fitted with a radio collar to help biologists track the bears’ activities throughout the rest of the year and to relocate dens in subsequent years for monitoring cub production, condition, and survival.
“There is great value in having resident participation for this type of wildlife research,” said DEC Acting Commissioner Basil Seggos. “DEC’s wildlife biologists use public feedback from these studies as a guidance measure for future wildlife management and planning efforts. I encourage anyone that encounters a bear den to follow our safety instructions and reach out to their local DEC office for reporting.”
Bears may den in a rock crevice, tree cavity, or under heavy brush or fallen tree. Since female bears generally give birth sometime in January or early February, a high-pitched squeal from the cubs may be audible if you are near a den. If anyone finds a bear den, DEC strongly urges the public to not approach or disturb the den, but simply to note the location and move away from the den site.
DEC requests that anyone locating a bear den to contact their local DEC Wildlife office with specifics about the den location, including GPS coordinates if possible.
More information about black bears in New York is available at DEC’s Black Bearwebpage.
